How a Diesel Engine Works
Diesel engines work by compressing air. As the air gets compressed is heats up hot enough to ignite the diesel fuel. This forces the piston down, turning the crank shaft. This power is then converted to the wheels. There are four strokes:
- The intake stroke
- The compression stroke
- The power stroke
- The exhaust stroke
During the intake stroke air is drawn into the engine from outside. During the compression stroke the air is compressed. The compression heats the air hot enough to ignite the diesel fuel. The power stroke is when the fuel is injected into the engine. The fuel ignites and expands, forcing the piston down and turning the crankshaft. The crankshaft has weights attached to it to keep momentum going in the engine. The power from the engine is then converted to wheels, powering the wheels. Of course, the whole process goes very, very fast with cranking speeds up to 4,000 RPM’s (rotations per minute) on an average diesel engine. Gasoline engines actually have a faster rotation speed than diesel’s with RPM’s up to 6,000-10,000. This is because the bore is longer on a diesel. This means lower RPM’s, but higher torque. That’s basically a brief explanation of how a diesel engine works.
